JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Assistant Vector Ecologist

GENERAL:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, under direct supervision from the Vector Ecologist. The Assistant Vector Ecologist will be expected to perform both lab and field studies, be knowledgeable in vectors and vector-borne diseases and assist the Vector Ecologist in coordinating all vector surveillance activities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists Vector Ecologist in planning and conducting the District's Vector Surveillance Program
  • Assists in conducing surveys of vectors, their sources, biology, population ecology and control
  • Identification of vectors and assistance in preparing collections, reporting and maintenance of the data collection related to vector surveillance
  • Assists the Vector Ecologist in all vector and disease surveillance collection including, but no limited to: Sentinal Chicken Program, Light Trap Program, EBS Trap Program, Gravid Trap Program, Tick-Borne Disease program and Rodent-Borne Disease program
  • Performs routine maintenance associated with mosquito rearing facilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience-

  • High School Diploma is required
  • Bachelor's degree in entomology, biological science, or closely related field is strongly recommended
  • Lab and/or field biology experience (1-2 years) is preferred
  • Computer skills, such as MS Word, Access and Excel are desirable

Knowledge of:

  • Biology, Ecology, Entomology

Licenses and/or Certification Required-

  • Possession of valid California Driver's License and driving record acceptable to the District's insurance carrier
  • Must obtain within (1) one year of employment, Vector certification through the California Department of Public Health in the areas of pesticide use, mosquito control, vertebrate control and terrestrial invertebrate control
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and background check

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to traverse uneven ground such as fields, stream beds, shallow ponds
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to wear protective equipment such as hip waders, bee suits and rubber boots, as needed
  • Ability to tolerate insect bites and bee stings
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion associated with computer usage; climb a ladder, bend, twist, crawl, balance, lift, push

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Due to regional climatic conditions field work must be performed in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee will be exposed to hazards that include: dust, chemicals, fumes, inclement weather conditions, rough terrain and various animals.

COMPENSATION RANGE:
Approximately $2,995 to $3,640 a month plus benefit package including health insurance, vision coverage, dental insurance and paid vacation.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Vector Control Assistant

GENERAL:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, under direct supervision from the Operations Supervisor and direction by the VCT III. The Vector Control Assistant will be expected to perform the organization, planning and coordination of mosquito and vector inspections and control efforts. This is the entry level class in the Vector Technician series. The series includes:

Vector Control Assistant (VA), Vector Control Technician I (VCTI), Vector Control Technician II (VCTII), Vector Control Technician III (VCTIII)

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The examples of function listed are representative but not necessarily exhaustive. Management is not precluded from assigning other related functions not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment for the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with a qualified disability to perform the essential functions of a job, on a case-by-case basis.

  • Inspects and surveys a variety of properties, lands, and facilities to determine the presence of vectors such as mosquitoes, rodents, ticks and other vectors
  • Helps maintain vector breeding source maps, inventory and records
  • Searches land ownership, and works with property owners, community groups and environmental groups to prevent and control vectors
  • Responds to citizens' complaints and requests for vector control services.
  • Sprays and treats to control vectors using judgment in selecting appropriate materials and methods.
  • Conducts source reduction and suggests pest prevention measures such as exclusion, sanitation, draining, filling in standing waters, eliminating harborage, improving storage practices
  • Operates and maintains a variety of specialized vector control tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Follows and enforces agriculture and pesticide codes and policies pertaining to vector management and control

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience-

  • Biology, Ecology, Entomology
  • Telephone, office and online etiquette
  • Arithmetic calculations

Licenses and/or Certification Required-

  • Possession of valid California Driver's License and driving record acceptable to the District's insurance carrier
  • ¢ Must obtain within (1) year of employment, Vector certification through the California Department of Public Health in the areas of pesticide use and mosquito control. Successful completion of pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and background check

Physical Demands:

Approximately 75% of the work is performed in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee will be exposed to hazards that include: dust, chemicals, fumes, inclement weather conditions, rough terrain and various animals.

COMPENSATION RANGE:
Approximately $2,326 to $2,856 a month, plus a benefits package including health insurance, vision coverage, dental insurance and paid vacation.
